The East Midlands is a fabulous combination of rolling, rural countryside with grassland and grazing livestock as well as the culture, entertainment and employment opportunities available.

It offers numerous lifestyle choices and excellent schools. It gives better value for money than can be found in the more traditional London commuter destinations and is a wonderful place to live. Its central location within the UK and the excellent road (A1 motorway) and rail network (East Coast Mainline) means that it is easy to travel to all other parts of the Country.

Rail Travel

Mainline train services operate to St Pancras International or London Kings Cross from stations all over the region as follows:

  • Peterborough – 45 mins
  • Grantham – 1hour 1 minute
  • Newark – 1hour 13 minutes
  • Lincoln – 1hour 44 minutes
  • Huntingdon - 58 mins
  • From Peterborough to Paris – 4 hrs 6 mins

Road Travel

The region is particularly well serviced by road links with the  A1 (th old Great North Road) running from south to north and giving good access to all parts of the country. 

Air Travel

  • East Midlands Airport is situated at Castle Donington, just of junction 24 of the M1
  • Stansted Airport is just off the the M11 at junction 8 or 8a.  Trains go direct from Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Stamford and Peterborough
  • Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a short distance north from Retford
  • Birmingham International Airport is easily accessible off the M42 and M6.  Direct trains from Peterborough, Stamford, Oakham and Melton Mowbray

Leisure

There is a huge diverse range of recreational actitivies available in the region.

Being largely rural, there is a significant emphasis on country field sports and the area is home to four major hunting packs: the Cottesmore, Quorn, Belvoir and Fitzwilliam.

Shooting enthusiasts are also well served with both clay pigeon and game shoots on offer and there are numerous opportunities for anglers to pursue their passion.

The superb facilities at Rutland Water and Tallington Lakes provide extensive opportunities for sailing, water skiing, kayaking and canoeing, rock climbing as well as learning to ski on a dry ski slope.

You can learn to play polo, or watch fast moving tournaments at Rutland Polo Club or Ranksborough Polo Club, both close to Oakham.

Country life can be exoerienced at its absolute best in the East Midlands with agricultural shows, ploughing matches and county shows.  The East of England Showground near Peterborough offers a massive variety of events throughout the year.

Historic houses are in abundance in this region.  Burghley House, once   described as “the largest and grandest house of the first Elizabethan age” plays host to the famous Burghley Horse Trials each year; Grimsthorpe Castle and Belvoir Castle both host special events and are definitely worth visiting, along with the tulip fields of Spalding and its annual tulip festival, and Lincoln Cathedral, the third largest cathedral in England.
